Rescue teams in the southwestern Chinese city of Chongqing have recovered three additional bodies from the debris of a landslide that occurred last week, bringing the total confirmed death toll to 11. Authorities reported on Thursday that 50 people remain missing following the collapse in Pengshui County, which is situated at the edge of the city on the border of Hubei and Guizhou provinces.
The local county government stated that while search efforts remain ongoing, there have been no signs of life detected since the disaster occurred last Friday. The initial collapse resulted in 10 injuries and buried more than 10 residential buildings.
Describing the situation as “exceptionally challenging,” officials noted that the massive volume of debris, which includes a significant number of large boulders, has complicated the rescue work. Searchers have used heavy machinery and drones, and teams have blasted some of the boulders into small pieces as part of the rescue work, according to the county government.
