Moroccan security forces have arrested hundreds of migrants attempting to enter the Spanish exclave of Ceuta by both land and sea. According to reports from the Moroccan state broadcaster Medi 1 TV on Sunday, 294 migrants from sub-Saharan Africa were apprehended during these attempts on Saturday.
In a related enforcement action, authorities also arrested 61 individuals of Moroccan nationality accused of facilitating the migration attempts, the broadcaster reported. The surge in activity at the border follows an increase in social media posts that encouraged migrants to gather and attempt to reach the Spanish city, which is located on Morocco’s northern coast.
In response to the attempted crossings, both Spanish and Moroccan officials have increased their security presence and restricted movement toward the border area. A senior Moroccan diplomat, speaking on the condition of anonymity, noted that more than 20,000 security personnel are deployed daily along the border with Ceuta at a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars.
Thousands of migrants from various African nations and beyond travel to Morocco annually, driven by conflict, poverty, and instability, with the goal of reaching Europe. Many target Ceuta or Melilla—another Spanish enclave on the northern coast—in the hope of eventually reaching mainland Spain for improved economic prospects.
