A tip about a swerving van on a highway outside Oslo has led to the prison sentencing of three Norwegian citizens involved in a massive U.S. investment fraud and money laundering scheme.

The economic crime unit, Okokrim, announced on Thursday that two men and a woman from Norway were convicted of aggravated money laundering. The charges stemmed from allegations that proceeds from a major investment scheme in the United States were converted into millions of dollars worth of American Eagle silver coins. The trio, who were convicted of organizing the scheme and storing the coins, received prison sentences of up to two and a half years. Two British citizens who also faced charges in the case were acquitted. Because both sides have the right to appeal, the verdict is not yet final.

The case took a dramatic turn in April 2025 when police in Baerum, a municipality located west of the capital, inspected a van after receiving reports that it was swerving on the highway. Inside, officers discovered tens of thousands of American Eagle silver coins. A second van that arrived at the scene shortly afterward was found to be carrying tens of thousands more. In total, authorities seized nearly 67,000 coins, which officials valued at least 25 million Norwegian krone (approximately $2.65 million).

Public Prosecutor Jon André Hvoslef-Eide expressed satisfaction with the outcome. "It is gratifying that the silver has been recovered and that a verdict has now been handed down, enabling the victims of the fraud in the U.S.A to have the misappropriated assets returned to them," Hvoslef-Eide said in a statement. He later told reporters that the unidentified victims would have their assets returned once the entire judicial process is finalized.

The search for the coins has been a yearslong effort. Acting on a request from American authorities, investigators were actively searching for missing U.S. silver coins when they made the April 2025 discovery. This followed an earlier breakthrough in 2019, when investigators uncovered a separate hoard of 79,500 silver coins.

American Eagle coins are produced by the U.S. Mint for collectors using various precious metals, including silver, gold, and palladium. Due to a significant rise in silver prices over the past year, the recovered Norwegian haul is now worth even more than it was at the time of its disappearance.
