President Donald Trump has announced what he describes as a “historic” agreement with Venezuela, aimed at tapping into the country’s significant petroleum reserves. Trump stated that the transaction is set to “more than double” American oil reserves and increase the national supply, with the ultimate goal of lowering gas prices for consumers.
The agreement was reportedly finalized by Senator Marco Rubio and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, who negotiated the deal with Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodriguez. According to the announcement, the arrangement functions through a partnership with private business interests. Trump claims that Venezuela will surrender up to 50 million barrels of oil to the United States as part of this initiative.
This development follows a series of high-stakes events earlier this year, including the arrest of former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, on January 3 during a military operation authorized by the US. Since those arrests, the Trump administration has faced ongoing pressure to address domestic fuel costs, leading to the decision to utilize Venezuela's resources, which are recognized as the largest proven oil reserves in the world at an estimated 303 billion barrels.
Beyond the immediate supply of oil, Trump has called on US energy firms to commit at least $100bn (£75bn) toward the restoration of Venezuela’s domestic oil industry, which has seen a significant decline in production since the late 1990s. The President also asserted legal claims to the country’s oil, alleging that Venezuela had previously “unilaterally seized and sold American oil, American assets and American platforms,” which he stated resulted in costs to the US totaling billions of dollars.
