A New York Times executive was fatally shot on Saturday in a car park in Dublin, California, located approximately 35 miles (56km) west of San Francisco. The victim, 40-year-old Jonathan McKinsey, served as the newspaper's director of engineering for games player experience. He was found with multiple gunshot wounds outside the Dublin Sports Grounds at 15:00 (23:00 GMT) local time.
Authorities have arrested the victim's parents-in-law, 77-year-old Shouyong Zhang and 77-year-old Shili Chen, in connection with the killing. The couple faces several charges, including first-degree murder, felony conspiracy, wilful discharge of a firearm with gross negligence, and child endangerment. They are currently being held at the Santa Rita jail.
Witnesses at the scene provided harrowing accounts of the incident to local news outlet KGO-TV. Assad Razawi, who witnessed the shooting, stated, "I saw the guy drop to the floor: head bloody and chest bloody." His daughter reported seeing the suspects "walking together and then casually walk away from the shooting." Police noted that the couple remained in the vicinity of the attack and were apprehended by a passing officer several minutes later.
McKinsey was pronounced dead at the scene. While the investigation is ongoing, police have not yet disclosed a motive for the shooting. It remains unclear whether the defendants have secured legal representation, but they are scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday to formally face the charges.
