US President Donald Trump signed a memorandum on Thursday, setting an ambitious target to expand the nation's space transportation industry. The order aims to facilitate more than 1,000 launches and reentries from American soil annually by 2030.

According to a White House fact sheet, this directive replaces an outdated National Space Transportation Policy. The new strategy focuses on increasing access to space, strengthening the industrial base for space transportation, and broadening private-sector participation. The administration stated that this expansion is designed to bolster US economic and national security, while simultaneously creating new opportunities for aerospace manufacturing and commercial space companies.

The memorandum instructs federal agencies to collaborate with private entities to accelerate the development of space transportation infrastructure. This includes streamlining permitting processes, conducting faster environmental reviews, and optimizing the scheduling and utilization of various launch ranges. Additionally, the order calls for the identification of new launch and reentry sites, alongside the designation of priority airspace for specific space launch corridors.

Specific directives have been issued to the NASA administrator to support commercial robotic missions to Mars and facilitate commercial transportation to and from the Moon. The administrator is also tasked with exploring commercial options for the transport of humans to and from Mars. Beyond these goals, the White House noted that the increased launch capacity is expected to support critical services, including military readiness, satellite communications, weather forecasting, navigation, and timing technologies.
