A violent assault on a police checkpoint in northern Pakistan on Wednesday evening resulted in the deaths of at least seven police officers and eight terrorists. The incident took place in the Hangu district, located within the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, according to District Police Officer Tariq Habib.
In addition to the fatalities, 22 police personnel were wounded during the exchange, with some of the injured currently listed in critical condition at a local medical facility. Security forces have since initiated a clearance operation in the area. No organization has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
This violence follows another incident just days prior in the nearby Tank district of the same province, where unidentified militants targeted a security check post. In that Friday attack, terrorists used an explosives-laden vehicle to strike, killing 15 people, including soldiers, police officers, and government personnel. Military officials reported that security forces killed 12 militants during that encounter.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which shares a border with Afghanistan, has experienced a significant increase in violent activity attributed to the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). The TTP is a distinct organization but maintains close ties with the Afghan Taliban, who regained power in Afghanistan in 2021.
The surge in attacks across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the southern province of Balochistan has created a severe rift between Pakistan and its neighbor. While Pakistan has repeatedly accused the Afghan Taliban government of allowing these attacks to originate from Afghan soil, the Taliban administration denies any involvement. The ongoing conflict has led to air strikes by Pakistan against terrorist targets within Afghan territory.
