Sikandar Raza Explains Strategy Behind Zimbabwe’s Eight-Batter Lineup

July 16, 2026

Following a 32-run victory over Bangladesh in the opening match of their three-game T20I series at Bulawayo, Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza has shed light on his team's strategic shift to include eight batters in the lineup. Raza emphasized that the approach is designed to empower his players to express themselves fearlessly, with the ultimate goal of consistently reaching totals exceeding 200 runs, a benchmark he believes is necessary to remain competitive in the modern international game.

"I feel world cricket has gone forward and I feel like Zimbabwe has been a very good 160-170 team. And I feel if we do not improve and challenge ourselves and upskill ourselves to try and get to 200, I think we'll be left behind by the rest of the world," Raza stated. He explained that on a wicket where 155 is considered par, his side managed to post 171. The captain noted that the eight-batter strategy encourages players to be both fearless and accountable, giving them the confidence to attack during critical overs to stay ahead of the required run rate.

Beyond batting, Raza highlighted that the depth of the squad allows him to utilize versatile all-rounders like Milton Shumba, Ryan Burl, Dion Myers, and Brian Bennett. He expressed a desire to put his team under pressure to see if these players can deliver with the ball when called upon, noting that this process builds self-belief and accountability across the board.

Raza also praised his pace attack, specifically highlighting the efforts of Richard Ngarava, Blessing Muzarabani, and Brad Evans. Despite Ngarava not being at 100% fitness due to a recent injury, Raza commended his commitment to the national team. He also expressed satisfaction with the progress of Brad Evans, noting that the player is putting in significant work to be recognized as a genuine all-rounder. Raza remains optimistic about Evans's trajectory, stating that he is on the right track to add value to both international and franchise cricket. "And I can assure you, Inshallah, his graph is going to keep going up and up and he's going to keep getting better and better," he added.

Looking ahead, the captain urged his team to remain focused on the immediate future rather than looking too far down the road. "I've always said that when you start looking too far ahead you lose sight of what's right in front of you. I, as a captain, and the boys upstairs are looking at Friday and after Friday we'll look at Sunday and then we see where we get to," he pointed out. While he is pleased with the win, he stressed that there is still room for improvement and that the squad is focused solely on the next game, maintaining a step-by-step approach to the series.

Zimbabwe won the opening game of the ongoing three-match T20I series against Bangladesh by 32 runs to take a 1-0 lead at Bulawayo.

"But most importantly, have that confidence that you are set and you can take down that big over, that 15-run over and then another 15-run over so that you're always ahead of par.
