Andrea Pirlo has announced that he is no longer under consideration to become the head coach of the Italian national football team. The 47-year-old, who previously enjoyed a stellar playing career and was a key member of the 2006 World Cup-winning squad, had emerged as an unexpected favorite to lead the national side as they attempt to recover from failing to qualify for the World Cup for the third consecutive time.
In a statement posted on Instagram, Pirlo expressed his disappointment regarding the situation. He noted that he learned of the decision to remove him from the candidate list on the evening of July 26. Pirlo thanked Italy's technical director, former AC Milan teammate Paolo Maldini, and advisor Leonardo for their confidence in his abilities. However, he lamented the public controversy that surrounded his candidacy, stating that he regretted how a decision based on sporting criteria was transformed into a debate that attributed intentions and ideas to him that did not reflect his personality.
Pirlo, who currently coaches the United Arab Emirates side Dubai United, has faced scrutiny over his limited coaching resume, which includes only one Italian Cup trophy since he began his managerial career in 2020. His previous stints at the helm of Juventus, Sampdoria, and the Turkish club Karagumruk were also noted, along with concerns regarding a contract he held with a Russian betting firm. Reports from Italian media suggest that while Maldini and Leonardo favored Pirlo over the more experienced Antonio Conte, the newly appointed federation chief, Giovanni Malago, had opposed the appointment from the outset.
The coaching search remains complex, with Antonio Conte, who turns 57 on July 31, back in contention. Conte, who previously managed Italy from 2014 to 2016 and reached the Euro 2016 quarter-finals, has won Serie A titles with three different clubs and the Premier League with Chelsea. Meanwhile, Paolo Maldini has reportedly threatened to resign after only three weeks in his post if either Conte or former Italy coach Roberto Mancini, who led the team to Euro 2020 success, is appointed. Maldini's preferred candidate is the Brazil-born former Italy international Thiago Motta, who has managed clubs including Bologna and Juventus.
