New Zealand actor Melanie Lynskey has been cast to portray convicted Australian triple murderer Erin Patterson in an upcoming limited true crime series set to premiere on Paramount+ in 2027. Titled Mushroom Murders: There’s More to Unearth, the project will also see the Emmy-nominated actor serve as an executive producer.

The show dramatises the 97-day period spanning from a deadly 2023 lunch in Leongatha, Victoria, to Patterson's subsequent arrest. During the meal at her home, Patterson served individual portions of beef wellington containing toxic death cap mushrooms to her estranged in-laws. The poisonous meal killed her husband’s parents, Don and Gail Patterson, along with his aunt, Heather Wilkinson. Heather’s husband, Ian Wilkinson, spent several weeks in hospital before surviving the ordeal.

Patterson, 51, received a life sentence in September 2025 for the three murders and the attempted murder of Ian Wilkinson. She is currently appealing her convictions, with her defense team describing the judicial outcome as a "catastrophic" failure of the legal system. The sensational case previously captivated global audiences, giving rise to numerous books, podcasts, and television projects.

Lynskey, widely recognized for her roles in Yellowjackets, The Last of Us, Two and a Half Men, and But I’m a Cheerleader, unveiled the new drama during the Paramount+ and Ten upfronts. Held at the MasterChef Kitchen inside the Royal Melbourne Showgrounds—the same venue where Megan, Duchess of Sussex, is scheduled to co-host Junior MasterChef Australia in 2027—the announcement drew audible gasps from assembled media representatives and industry stakeholders as Lynskey expressed from the stage that she was "very excited" for the role.

Beverley McGarvey, Network 10 president and head of streaming for Paramount+ Australia, said in a statement that the series aims to deliver "a gripping real-life story, that captivated Australia and the world to the screen with the scale, quality and creative vision audiences expect." Mushroom Murders marks the second television adaptation of the case, following ABC's 2025 announcement of Toxic, a project created by Elise McCredie and Tony Ayres that has not yet confirmed a release date.
