The Arab League has issued a sharp condemnation of ongoing Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon, describing the actions as a dangerous escalation that threatens to undermine efforts toward resolving the regional conflict. The organization warned that these strikes jeopardize attempts to end the occupation and violate Lebanon's sovereignty.
Reports from Lebanon indicate that at least 11 people were killed and 19 others, including women and children, were injured in Israeli air strikes on Saturday. These attacks occurred despite a ceasefire framework that had been established on April 17. The spokesperson for the Arab League secretary-general stated that targeting civilians in Nabatieh and surrounding areas constitutes a blatant violation of Lebanese sovereignty and an attempt to impose an unacceptable new reality on the ground.
The Arab League further asserted that these policies appear designed to obstruct negotiations and prolong confrontations. In response to the worsening situation, the organization called for immediate international intervention, specifically urging the United States to act to halt the Israeli military operations and ensure compliance with UN Security Council Resolution 1701. The pan-Arab body reaffirmed its full support for the Lebanese state and its efforts to maintain security, stability, and civil peace.
The recent intensification of violence began on Saturday, with Israeli warplanes striking residential targets, including a house in Ansar and a two-storey building in Deir al-Zahrani within the Nabatieh district. Additionally, the Israeli military utilized phosphorus munitions to shell the Ali al-Taher hill area and conducted air strikes near the Teachers' Training Institute and the Husseini Club in Nabatieh al-Fawqa. The Israeli military claimed these actions were a response to Hezbollah activity in its designated security zone.
Hezbollah has characterized the escalation as a political maneuver by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to bolster his domestic standing. The surge in hostilities occurs despite a June 26 agreement intended to facilitate a gradual Israeli withdrawal from occupied territories in southern Lebanon, where Israeli forces have currently advanced more than 10 kilometres into the country.
