Chelsea forward Mykhailo Mudryk has been cleared to return to professional football with immediate effect following the resolution of his appeal against a four-year doping suspension. The Ukraine international was originally banned after a 2024 drug test identified a low concentration of meldonium, a prohibited substance, in his system.
The player filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport, and subsequent changes to World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) procedures have altered the landscape of the case. The Football Association (FA) stated that while these changes are not retroactive, if Mr Mudryk's sample was collected today, the concentration of meldonium would not have been reported, and no anti-doping rule violations would have resulted. Following this development and other case circumstances, the FA and Mr Mudryk, with WADA's agreement, resolved the appeal proceedings.
As part of the resolution, Mr Mudryk accepted that he had committed the anti-doping rule violations (ADRVs) as charged and acceded to a period of ineligibility equal to the time served at the date of the agreement. Consequently, Mr Mudryk is no longer ineligible and may return to competition immediately.
Mudryk, who joined Chelsea from Shakhtar Donetsk for £62 million ($83 million) in 2023, has not played since November 2024. The 25-year-old had struggled to make an impact for the west London club prior to his ban, but he will now have the opportunity to impress new Blues boss Xabi Alonso.
In a statement, Chelsea noted that this has been an extremely difficult period for Misha, both professionally and personally, and expressed pleasure that the matter has reached a conclusion allowing him to return to football. The club highlighted that Misha has consistently maintained that he never knowingly or intentionally used a prohibited substance and did not know how traces of the substance entered his system. Throughout the process, he conducted himself professionally and with resilience during one of the most challenging periods of his career. Chelsea stated they know how much this opportunity to return means to him, and their focus is now on supporting Misha's reintegration into the squad and helping him resume his career.
