Pakistan mounted a determined response on the second day of the first Test at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy, finishing at 199/3 in reply to West Indies' first-innings total of 311. The foundation for the visitors' recovery was a 155-run partnership for the second wicket between Imam-ul-Haq and Shan Masood. West Indies were eventually bowled out for 311, with Mohammad Ali taking 4-50 and Mohammad Abbas claiming 3-66.
West Indies resumed the morning at 194/3. Kavem Hodge, who started on 83, managed only a single run before being dismissed by Khurram Shahzad for 84. Shai Hope continued to anchor the hosts' innings, reaching his half-century despite a dropped catch by Azan Awais at first slip off the bowling of Mohammad Ali. Following the drinks break, Justin Greaves edged a delivery to Salman Agha, providing Ali with his first wicket. Shortly thereafter, Mohammad Abbas dismissed captain Roston Chase, who nicked behind. Shahzad claimed the wicket of Kemar Roach, but Shamar Joseph provided a late burst of scoring, striking a six and four boundaries to push the total past 300 before the lunch interval.
Mohammad Ali dominated the second session, dismissing Joseph with a short ball early on. He proceeded to trap Shai Hope leg before for 92 and bowled Jayden Seales two balls later, concluding the innings with figures of 4-50. Despite an early setback when Kemar Roach bowled Azan Awais for a duck, Pakistan’s batting unit steadied the ship. Masood experienced early jitters in the form of a couple of fortuitous boundaries and a tough catching chance going down, but the intent to keep the scoreboard moving forward was clear on Pakistan’s part as they got to 50 in the ninth over. Pakistan waited 21 deliveries and even had the ‘keeper up to the stumps before taking the second new ball.
Imam-ul-Haq and Shan Masood took control, with Imam scoring fluently from the start. Masood survived a few early chances and streaky boundaries but settled into his rhythm to reach a 46-ball half-century. Both batters navigated the bowling of Jomel Warrican with relative ease. Imam brought up his 11th Test fifty with a drive off Roach, but his innings ended at 63 when he edged a delivery from Shamar Joseph to second slip. Following the partnership's conclusion, Babar Azales was dismissed by Jayden Seales for 23. Masood remained unbeaten on 88 at the close of play, joined by Salman, who was yet to score as fading light brought an early end to the day's action. Pakistan currently trails by 112 runs, with Shamar Joseph and Kemar Roach each taking 1-33.
Captain Babar Azam began positively with a couple of early boundaries, but was squared up by Seales and edged behind for 23.
Giving him company was Salman, who did not open his account after nine deliveries as the fading light took effect in the last half hour.
