President Trump stated on Saturday that it is time for Ukraine to transition to new leadership, suggesting that current President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has failed to take sufficient action to conclude the ongoing conflict with Russia. Trump attributed the recent rise in diesel prices to Ukraine’s tactical strikes against Russian oil refineries, arguing that these actions have negatively affected farmers and ranchers globally.
"He wants to make problems for the world. He wants to make problems for our farmers, our ranchers, with diesel fuel," Trump said. The former president further asserted that the Russian invasion, which began over 4 1/2 years ago, would not have occurred under his administration, characterizing the war as a result of "incompetence" and stating that it "should have never started." Trump claimed that Zelenskyy has "lost 30% of your country" and that the conflict has resulted in over two million deaths.
In response to these remarks, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga defended the president on X, stating that Zelenskyy maintains the support of the Ukrainian people and has the right to lead. Sybiga added that criticism from abroad serves as confirmation that the president is performing his duties effectively and deserves continued support.
On Friday, Trump announced a deal in which Russia would supply more than 300,000 tons of diesel, followed by 500,000 tons in November and 1 million tons shortly thereafter. He further claimed that Russia would deliver an additional 3,000,000 tons of diesel fuel within a short period. This development follows a Treasury Department announcement on Friday that it would temporarily waive sanctions on the Russian energy sector to facilitate the supply of diesel to the global market, a move that contradicts a sweeping sanctions law signed by Trump last month intended to limit Russia's oil and gas revenues.
The announcement drew sharp criticism, with opponents noting that such measures provide Russia with the resources to continue its military campaign. Meanwhile, the conflict on the ground remains intense. On Saturday, Russian aerial bombs struck residential buildings in the Zaporizhzhia region, killing at least 20 people, including three children, and wounding at least 18 others, according to Mykhailo Semikin, head of the regional military administration.
Additionally, missiles targeted Kyiv, leaving four people wounded, as reported by Mayor Vitalii Klitschko. Zelenskyy addressed the situation on X, noting that Russia responded to the lifting of diesel sanctions by attacking residential areas, and argued that such events demonstrate that Moscow interprets any easing of pressure as a signal to continue its bombardment of Ukrainian cities.
