Travelers at Gatwick Airport, located south of London, faced significant disruptions on Sunday after a power outage at a water treatment plant triggered a widespread water supply failure. The incident left airport restrooms out of order and forced the closure of multiple restaurants within the facility.
SES Water, the utility provider, reported that the issue stemmed from a power failure at the Bough Beech Water Treatment Works. This disruption caused a drop in water pressure and a temporary loss of service for customers across Kent and Sussex counties. The company stated that it was actively working to restore the water supply to the affected areas.
Gatwick Airport officials issued an apology on X, acknowledging the inconvenience caused to passengers across both terminals. While the airport reported that it was distributing bottled water to those affected, some travelers challenged this claim. Passenger Paul Lee expressed frustration, noting that he had not seen any water distribution or received official information regarding the outage. He remarked, "For people who need to go to the toilet, this isn’t good. I’m taking off soon, so that’s fine, but for passengers in a few hours, this will be bad."
Former member of Parliament Michael Dugher also criticized the situation on social media. He highlighted that with bars and restaurants shuttered, passengers were forced to sit on the floor due to a lack of available seating, urging the airport to open additional areas to accommodate the crowds.
